Ask Samuele: May 2021

This month, Alex from Ealing asks…

Dear Samuele,

I’ve been told that it’s a good idea to flush boiling water down the sink to get rid of the build-up of grease and grime.

Is this right?

Yours sincerely,

Alex

Samuele says:

Ciao, Alex! And grazie mille for your question.

You actually raise a very important point.

Many people do just that. They believe that the heat of the water will melt away any grease and grime.

Yes, they are correct. But there is a price to pay, so I don’t recommend doing it.

The price being that the rubber gasket, which sits below your sink, will begin to deteriorate. This will cause you even bigger problems in the future.

I suggest that, firstly, you always try to avoid pouring any greasy substances down the sink.

They clog up our sewage system and help to cause those huge ‘fatbergs’ you’ve probably heard about.

However, if you want to give it a bit of a flush through, just run the hot water tap for a minute or two.

As long as it doesn’t go above 60 degrees C, you’re all good.

Ciao for now,

Samuele
