Hi Nicola, it’s lovely to meet you! What do you do at the Italian Plumber?
Hi, it’s lovely to meet you, too. I work as a gas engineer and plumber.

Where are you from?
The very beautiful south Puglia in Italy.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Helping customers is probably the most satisfying part, but I also enjoy the fact that there is always a new challenge at some point in the week. There’s always something new to learn.

Have you ever had a funny or unusual experience while on a job?
I know many of my colleagues have funny stories to tell, but my experiences have all been very normal and uneventful. I suppose I’ve been kind of lucky in that respect. Though, it would be nice to have something funny happen from time to time.

What’s one tool you couldn’t live without?
Definitely an adjustable spanner. There’s no way I could do my job without it.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in plumbing?
Be prepared to work very hard. No training or plumbing course could have prepared me for the amount of work you need to put in. However, it is very rewarding, and I enjoy what I do very much.

What inspired you to become a plumber?
After I decided I no longer wanted to work in property maintenance, I took a very pragmatic approach to my next career move. I thought: ‘what is it that people can’t live without?’

Water was the very first thing that came to mind, and there will always be a tap that needs fixing or a boiler that needs servicing, so that set the path for a new career.

Why did you decide to end your career in property maintenance?
I’d been doing it for many years and just felt there was no more for me to learn. I became bored and frustrated.

If you weren’t a plumber, what would you do?
I studied art at college, so I would probably paint both portraits and landscapes.

What are your hobbies?
I have two children both under five, so I’m too busy for hobbies at the moment.
But if I had the time, I’d probably be painting.

If you could get on a plane right now, where would you go and who would you go with?
I’d go straight back to Puglia to spend time with the rest of my family.
