Ask Samuele: June 2022

This month, Terek from Molesey asks…

Dear Samuele,

I’ve always been one to drink bottled water, but now that the cost of living is skyrocketing, the price of water has become ridiculous. So my question is, how safe is it to drink normal tap water?

Yours thirstily,

Tarek

Samuele says:

Ciao, Tarek! And grazie mille for your question.

Yes, UK tap water is very safe to drink. In fact, it’s amongst the safest in the world and there are strict standards that must be met.

Those standards cover such things as micro-organisms, nitrates and pesticides, metals, and the way the water looks and actually tastes.

The body which governs it is the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). They were formed in 1990 to provide independent reassurance that water supplies in England and Wales are safe, and drinking water quality is acceptable to consumers.

And no, you don’t have to bother with the likes of water filters – you can run that tap and drink as much as you like. It’s all good.

Ciao for now.

Samuele
