Ask Samuele: September 2024
This month, Peter from Cheam asks…
Dear Samuele,
I’ve always been a believer in having multiple smoke alarms around the house. You can’t be too careful.
I’m now thinking about installing a carbon monoxide detector.
Can you recommend one, and where are the best places to put them in my home?
Yours sincerely,
Peter
Ciao, Peter. And grazie mille for your question!
Faulty boilers, water heaters, gas stoves, and central heating systems can all emit dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO). Installing a CO alarm is not just a good idea—it’s essential.
Even if you don’t have any of the items listed above, it’s still worth getting one (or perhaps more than one) because carbon monoxide can seep through neighbouring walls and ceilings.
You should install alarms wherever there is a potential source of carbon monoxide, and also in every bedroom in your home. I recommend any alarm certified to British Standard EN50291.
Alarms can cost as little as £15, so it’s a no-brainer.

Of course, none of this is a substitute for ensuring your appliances are safe in the first place. So if you have any doubts, or if you want peace of mind, give my team a call.
Ciao for now.
Samuele
