Ask Samuele: July 2025
This month, Leisha from Fulham asks…
Dear Samuele,
I’m getting really fed up with the limescale build-up on my kitchen and bathroom taps.
It’s become so hard it’s almost like stone — it even grazes my hand when I turn the taps on and off.
Can you recommend a natural product to help remove it? I want to avoid using harsh chemicals.
Yours sincerely,
Leisha
Ciao, Leisha. And grazie mille for your question!
The best way to naturally get rid of that annoying, crusty limescale is to use vinegar and baking soda. Here are the steps you need to take:
- Soak a cloth or some kitchen roll in white vinegar, then wrap it around the base of the tap where the limescale is built up. You want it nice and soaked — not just damp.
- Leave it there for at least 30–60 minutes. If it’s really stubborn (and it sounds like yours is), leave it even longer — overnight if you can. The vinegar works to break down the mineral deposits.
- Remove the cloth and sprinkle a bit of baking soda directly onto the area. You’ll see it fizz — that’s the reaction between the vinegar and baking soda, and it helps loosen things up.
- Scrub gently with an old toothbrush or non-scratch sponge. The gunk should start to shift. Take your time — don’t force it.
- Rinse well and wipe dry. You can repeat the process a few times if needed. If there are still little patches left, go again the next day. Eventually, it’ll lift.
To help prevent it coming back, try wiping down your taps after use and consider fitting a tap filter or softener if you’re in a hard water area.
Ciao for now.
Samuele
