Tip of the month: The Plumbing Inspector

When I decided to resurrect this blog, I didn’t just want to roll out the usual tips like, ‘how to change a washer’, or ‘why install a combi boiler?’. Not that there’s anything wrong with these handy bite-sized guides – they are genuinely useful things to write about.

Instead, I thought the best way to bring value to my readers was to base my posts on things that actually happen to me as a plumber, on a day-to-day basis. As laws, society, and the things that are important to us change, I get to learn about what people want, and tweak my services accordingly. So, without further ado, here’s this month’s Tip of The Month.

As people look for ways to get better value for money, they’re becoming more comfortable with the idea of investing a little more in the short term, in order to achieve bigger returns in the longer term.

So it hasn’t come as such a surprise, that in the last few years, I’ve been approached by home buyers, and sellers to effectively carry out plumbing and heating ‘inspections’. Here is are a couple of recent scenarios from both.

The buyer wanted an assurance that the heating system and boiler in the 4-bedroom property they had their eye on was intact and free from problems. They wanted to know that if they handed over their hard-earned cash, they weren’t going to incur a tonne of headaches and financial burden down the road.

We did the inspection and, bingo! We discovered £25k’s worth of potential problems.

Our findings gave a huge negotiating advantage to the buyer, and for such a tiny outlay.

Then the reverse. A lovely lady came to us explaining that she wanted to put her 2-bed cottage on the market. She was a very ‘no nonsense’ kind of person, and we enjoyed working for her. She wanted to be able to market the property at a price that would discourage timewasters and show exactly what great value the property was.

On both occasions we supplied a full report, detailing the good, the bad, and the ugly of each plumbing and heating requirement.

Each inspection and report took no more than a few hours to complete, but was absolutely invaluable to both parties.

So, naturally, I decided to offer this as a service. And what was I to call it?

It just had to be The Plumbing Inspector, of course!

So, if you are in the process of buying or selling a home, regardless of value, consider having an inspection carried out. If you already have a trusted plumbing company, go ahead and ask them. I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t want the work. Just be sure to request a report that is comprehensive, diligent, and well-presented.
